In the summer of 1638, towards the end of this great migration from the England of Charles I, Rev. Ezekiel Rogers and his followers set sail on the ship “John” from Hull England. On board were about twenty families, nearly all from Yorkshire, under the leadership of Rev. Rogers of Rowley, England, near Hull. Among the families were Frances Lambert, from Holme-on-Spaulding-Moor; Edward Carleton, from Barnston; Hugh Chaplin, Maximillian and Joseph Jewett, from Bradford; Robert and John Hazeltine, from Biddeford in Devon; William Jackson, from Rowley, and William and John Boynton, Thomas Nelson, John Spofford and Thomas Tenney.

The ship landed in Salem Harbor where they stayed the winter and spent the time looking for a more permanent location to settle.  Rev. Rogers appeared before Mr. Wilson’s church of Boston in the year 1638 and requested for himself, and his people, to join with Mr. Wilson’s church. His request was granted.  Rev. Rogers was urged to join a company, being formed to colonize Quinnipiack, now New Haven, Conn., but chose not to go.  Before the winter was over Ezekiel Rogers request of the General Court, a tract of land between Ipswich and Newbury. His request was granted and the settlement began in the spring of 1639.

By 1645, sixteen additional families had arrived in Rowley, including James Bailey, Nicholas Jackson, and John Pearson. Hugh Chaplin became a Freeman in 1642, and most of the others soon followed.  Previous to 1664 a Freeman meant that they were members of some Congregational Church and had taken the Freeman’s oath, and were entitled to vote.

The Rowley Company purchased additional land at the expense of about £ 800. Those who were able contributed the purchase money, and in the layout of the house lots, the amount given determined the size of the lot granted. Hugh Chaplin received the following, “To Hugh Chaplin, one lotte containginge an acre, and halfe, bounded on the south side by John Dresser’s house lott, part of it lyinge on the west side, and part of it on the ease side of the street.”

Although the first mention of the new plantation was in March of 1638, it was not incorporated until September of 1639. 

Hugh Chaplin was a respected citizen of Rowley, served the term of 1648 as juror in Rowley; served on the trial jury and was Overseer, 3, January 1650 and again 19, December 1641. Hugh had four boys, all born in Rowley. Three of his sons were minors at the time of his death. The lots that were Hugh’s in later divisions, were given to his heir and only living son Joseph, in his father’s right. Hugh Chaplin only lived fifteen years after settling in Rowley, he died testate, making his will a week before his death.

The will was not signed by Hugh Chaplin, but it was witnessed by Joseph Jewett and John Pickard, who proved the will in Ipswich Court, 31, March 1657. The will had not been proven by the widow within the twenty month allowed for the action, so she was sentenced to forfeit one hundred pounds to the court. On the 6th April 1657, Elizabeth Jackson petitioned the court for an abatement of the fine of  £100 for neglecting to present her former husband Hugh Chaplin's will to be probated and on 29 September 1657, the count moderated the fine of Nicholas Jackson for not proving the will of his wife's former husband.

He married Elizabeth.  Elizabeth died June 2, 1674 in Rowley, Essex Co., MA.. Elizabeth married Nicholas Jackson, December 9, 1656.

5. Joseph⁴ CHAPLIN (Hugh³, Ebenezer², Jeremiah¹) was born in Rowley, Essex Co., MA. December 11, 1645. Joseph died April 17, 1705 in Rowley, Essex Co., MA., at 57 years of age. Will  

He married Elizabeth WEST in Rowley, Essex Co., MA, February 21, 1671. Elizabeth was the daughter of Twifitt WEST and Mary CROSS. Elizabeth died October 12, 1702 in Rowley, Essex Co., MA.. 

Joseph and Elizabeth lived in the house built on the 1 1/2 acres granted originally to his father, Hugh Chaplin. This house was still in existence in the 1980's and was on State road (95). The house was in the possession of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities.

She married John SEARLE in Rowley, Essex Co., MA., November 23, 1708. John was born in Ipswich, MA. November 2, 1686. He was the son of Samuel and Deborah (Bragg) Searle. John died June 20, 1777 in Byfield, MA., at 90 years of age.

Jonathan died January 1, 1794 in Rowley, Essex Co., MA., at 86 years of age. He married Sarah BOYNTON in Rowley, Essex Co., MA., September 2, 1730.  Sarah was born March 5, 1708. Sarah was the daughter of Richard BOYNTON and Sarah DRESSER. Sarah died February 19, 1784 at 75 years of age.

She married Jonathan HARRIMAN in Rowley, Essex Co., MA., December 23, 1736.  Jonathan was born in Byfield, MA.. Jonathan died 1801 in Second Parish, now Georgetown, MA..

28. Joseph⁶ CHAPLIN (Jeremiah⁵, Joseph⁴, Hugh³, Ebenezer², Jeremiah¹)  was born in Rowley, Essex Co., MA. January 13, 1716. Joseph died November 23, 1791 in Leominister, MA., at 77 years of age. He married Sarah SEETON in Rowley, Essex Co., MA., December 1, 1747.

He married Susanne PRESCOTT June 24, 1779. Susanne was the daughter of James PRESCOTT. Susanne died September 5, 1832 in Groton, MA. Daniel Chaplin was a Congregational Minister at Groton, MA.

108. Joseph⁷ CHAPLIN (David⁶, Jeremiah⁵, Joseph⁴, Hugh³, Ebenezer², Jeremiah¹) was born in Lunenburgh, MA. January 23, 1741. Joseph died August 22, 1801 in Lunenburgh, MA., at 59 years of age. He married Lois HASTINGS in Lunenburgh, April 5, 1764. Lois Hastings was the daughter of Nathaniel Hastings and Lois Houghton. Nathaniel Hastings was the son of John Hastings and Sarah Fiske and a descendant of Deacon Thomas Hastings and his wife Margaret Cheney. John Hastings was the son of John Hastings and Abigail Hammond. Joseph Chaplin served as a Private during the Revolutionary War in Capt. Robert Longley's Co., Col. Asa Whitcomb's regiment, for 3 months and 10 days. He also is listed in other company's such as Capt. Sylvanus Smith's Co., Col. Timothy Biglow's regiment, and was finally discharged March 3, 1780 .

235 iii. Samuel CHAPLIN was born in Lunenburgh, MA. December 31, 1779. Samuel died January 23, 1864 in Pelham, NH, at 84 years of age. He married twice. He married Elizabeth WYMAN April 25, 1809.  He married Phoebe WYMAN in Pelham, NH, August 19, 1821.

252 iii. Lucretia CHAPLIN was born in Atkinson, NH January 17, 1773. She married David NORCROSS March 8, 1795.  David is the son of Jeremiah NORCROSS and Lucy CHAPLIN.

253 iv. Betsy CHAPLIN was born in Atkinson, NH June 4, 1775. She married Buckley HUNT October 8, 1794. 

254 v. Moses CHAPLIN was born in Atkinson, NH October 26, 1777. Moses died November 21, 1859 in Fitzwilliams, NH, at 82 years of age. He married Martha BENT September 25, 1800. 

255 vi. Mary CHAPLIN was born 1782. Mary died September 9, 1870 at 88 years of age. She married Artemas BEARD in Fitzwilliams, NH, May 2, 1809.

122. Moses⁷ CHAPLIN (Ebenezer⁶, Jeremiah⁵, Joseph⁴, Hugh³, Ebenezer², Jeremiah¹) was born in Rowley, Essex Co., MA. June 22, 1760. Moses died November 18, 1840 in Clarendon, VT, at 80 years of age. Served in Col. Enoch Hales' Regiment and in Col. Daniel Moore's regiment of Volunteers from Rindge, NH. He married Mary PLATTS in Reading, VT, August 12, 1781.  Mary was born in Rindge, NH January 31, 1760. Mary was the daughter of Abel PLATTS and Phoebe WETHERBEE. Mary died February 25, 1825 in Clarendon, VT, at 65 years of age.

263 i. Phoebe⁸ CHAPLIN  was born in Reading, VT November 2, 1782. She married Harvey CLARK in Reading, VT, November 13, 1802. 

264 ii. Moses CHAPLIN was born in Reading, VT. July 6, 1783. Moses died January 1, 1814 in Berkshire, VT, at 30 years of age. He married Abigail HALE in Reading, VT, April 14, 1806. 

265 iii. Aaron CHAPLIN was born in Reading, VT March 28, 1785. Aaron died January 19, 1860 in Berkshire Center, VT, at 74 years of age. He married twice. He married Marcia KIMBLE.  He married Martha HALE in Reading, VT., April 14, 1807. 

266 iv. Asa CHAPLIN was born in Reading, VT May 1, 1787. Asa died May 19, 1863 in Chittendon, VT, at 76 years of age. He married Amelia KEELER.
