1. Johann (John)¹ UMBERHAND  was born in Bavaria (Germany) June 9, 1814. Johann died July 29, 1870 in Boston, Suffolk County, MA, at 56 years of age. His body was interred in Jamaica Plains, MA., Forrest Hills Cemetery. On his death certificate his cause of death is listed as fracture of skull from accident. No obit has been found for John.

Johann (John) arrived in New York on October 16, 1833 on the ship Albany. On the passenger list the spelling of his name is Umbehend.  Eight of his 14 children were born in New York state. He is listed in the New York City Directory for the years 1844, 1845, 1846, and 1847. His occupation is listed as a tailor. By 1849 he and his family relocated to Roxbury, MA. and is shown in the 1850 Roxbury, MA. census and his trade again is listed as tailor. In the 1860 census his trade is listed at Lager Beer Laborer, but in 1870 his trade again is listed as tailor. By the 1870 census the family has moved to Cambridge, MA.  After John's death his wife is found living with their son Amos in the 1880 Cambridge, MA. census.

He married Maria Katherina BITNER about 1836, possibly in New York. Maria was born in Baden, Germany February 20, 1819. Maria was the daughter of Adam BITNER and Catherine. Maria died August 23, 1894 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., at 75 years of age. Her body was interred August 26, 1894 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co. MA, Cambridge Cemetery.

3 ii. Catherine UMBERHAND was born in New York about 1838. She married Joseph Temple, JR. in Roxbury, Norfolk Co., MA, September 3, 1857. Joseph was born about 1825. Joseph was the son of Joseph TEMPLE and Elizabeth.

+ 4 iii. William M. UMBERHAND was born about 1839.

+ 5 iv. Philip W. UMBERHAND was born September 1840.

6 v. Elizabeth UMBERHAND  was born in New York about 1842. Elizabeth witnessed the marriage of Philip JEKEL to Elizabeth Fay at Holy Trinity Church on 13, November 1869.

+ 7 vi. Frederick UMBERHAND was born about 1843.

+ 8 vii. Jacob UMBERHAND was born June 1845.

+ 9 viii. John UMBERHAND was born about 1845.

10 ix. Francis UMBERHAND was born in Roxbury, Norfolk County, MA. about 1849. Francis died April 4, 1849 in Roxbury, Norfolk County, MA, at less than one year of age.

11 x. Amos UMBERHAND was born in Roxbury, Norfolk County, MA. March 1850. Amos died January 11, 1916 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA., at 65 years of age. His body was interred January 13, 1916 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA., Cambridge Cemetery. Amos was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA. Amos was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA. Amos is listed in the Cambridge City Directory for the years 1870 as a plumber. In 1874 he is listed at the lager beer saloon at 383 Main and in 1875 he is back listed a a plumber. From 1876 through 1880 he is listed at the saloon at 514 Main.

12 xi. Adeline UMBERHAND was born in Roxbury, Norfolk County, MA. September 8, 1852. Adeline died 1853 in Roxbury, Norfolk County, MA., at less than one year of age.

13 xii. Louisa UMBERHAND was born in Roxbury, Norfolk County, MA. January 26, 1855. She married Frank. H. BABCOCK in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA., March 24, 1876.  Frank. was born about 1848. Frank. was the son of John BABCOCK and Martha.

14 xiii. Ferdinand UMBERHAND was born in Roxbury, Norfolk County, MA. January 21, 1857. Ferdinand died December 2, 1904 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA., at 47 years of age. His body was interred December 4, 1904 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA., Cambridge Cemetery. He married Helen FULTON in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA., June 20, 1878.  Helen was born in Cambridge, MA. Helen is the daughter of John FULTON and Elizabeth FULTON.

15 xiv. Emma S. UMBERHAND was born in Roxbury, Norfolk County, MA. March 2, 1860.

2. Sophia² UMBERHAND (Johann (John)¹) was born in New York about 1837.

She married Nichol HAIN.  Nichol was born in Bohemia about 1828. Nichol was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA.

Sophia UMBERHAND and Nichol HAIN had the following children:

16 i. John³ HAIN was born in Massachusettes about 1858.

17 ii. Lizzie HAIN was born in Massachusettes about 1866.

4. William M.² UMBERHAND (Johann (John)¹) was born in New York about 1839. William died June 17, 1871 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., at 31 years of age. His body was interred in Roxbury, Norfolk Co., MA..

He married Bertha BEST Boston, Suffolk Co., MA., October 22, 1868.  Bertha was born about 1850. Bertha was the daughter of Andrew BEST. He was listed in the Cambridge City Directory for the years 1868 and 1869 as a cigar maker. His cause of death is listed as typhoid fever.

William M. UMBERHAND and Bertha BEST had the following children:

18 i. Catherine E.³ UMBERHAND was born in Massachusettes February 1869. Catherine died July 15, 1869 Boston, Suffolk Co., MA, at less than one year of age.

19 ii. Sophia Emma UMBERHAND was born in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA. January 11, 1870.

5. Philip W.² UMBERHAND (Johann (John)¹) was born in New York September 1840. Philip died July 27, 1918 in Newton, Middlesex Co., MA., at 77 years of age. His body was interred July 30, 1918 in Newton, Middlesex Co., MA., Newton Cemetery.

He married Abigail O'BRIEN Boston, Suffolk Co., MA., June 5, 1864 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Their witnesses were William Campbell and Margaret Bready. They were married by Rev. Guiseppe Nicola Baratta. Abigail was born Boston, Suffolk Co., MA March 1848. Abigail was the daughter of William O'BRIEN and Ellen. Abigail died January 14, 1903 in Newton, Middlesex County, MA, at 54 years of age. Her body was interred in West Roxbury, Suffolk County, MA. Abby died of tuberculosis.

Philip was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Newton, Middlesex Co., MA. Philip was listed as the head of a family on the 1910 Census in Newton, Middlesex Co., MA. His occupation was listed as plumber.

From the Newton Circuit, 2, August 1918:

Phillip W. Umberhand, the veteran journeyman plumber, passed away on Saturday of last week after an illness lasting several years in the 80th year of his age. Mr. Umberhand was born in the city of New York of German parentage. He came to this village as a young man and went to work for A. W. Snow, being his boss plumber for 15 years. When G. Wilbur Thompson succeeded Mr. Snow he remained with Mr. Thompson, and was retained in various capacities by Mr. Thompson until his failing health caused him to relinquish active duties, but he was still retained on the payroll at a nominal salary.
Mr. Umberhand is survived by three grandchildren, a fourth having died in France in the service of the United States government a few weeks ago.
Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. William Small, on Tuesday afternoon, quite a number of his old associates from this village attending. The services were conducted by Rev. S. W. Whitlock of Roxbury.

7. Frederick² UMBERHAND (Johann (John)¹)  was born in New York about 1843. Frederick died August 8, 1884 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., at 41 years of age. His body was interred in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA..

He married Margaret LYONS in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA, July 10, 1870.  Margaret is the daughter of Dennis LYONS. 

Frederick vouched for Arnold Verkampen, a cooper smith and Holy Trinity parishioner, when the latter was naturalized on 23, October 1876. Frederick is listed in the Cambridge Cities Directories for the years 1865 through 1870 and the again in the 1872 through 1878 as a brush maker. In the 1879 city directory for Cambridge he is listed as an upholsterer and in the 1880 directory as a brush maker again.

23 ii. Mary UMBERHAND was born in Massachusettes about 1872. Mary died December 18, 1876 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA, at 4 years of age.

24 iii. Frederick UMBERHAND was born in Massachusettes about 1875.

25 iv. Lizzie UMBERHAND was born in Massachusettes about 1877.

8. Jacob² UMBERHAND (Johann (John)¹) was born in New York June 1845. Jacob died January 10, 1919 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., at 73 years of age. His body was interred January 14, 1919 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., Cambridge Cemetery.

He married Mary FRITCHER Boston, Suffolk Co., MA., December 31, 1868.  Mary was born in Baden, Germany April 1847. Mary died January 12, 1916 at 68 years of age. Her body was interred January 15, 1916 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA., Cambridge Cemetery. 

Jacob was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA. Jacob was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA. Jacob is listed in the Cambridge City Directory for the years 1871 through 1875 as a machinist.

Jacob UMBERHAND and Mary FRITCHER had the following children:

27 ii. Adolphaus UMBERHAND was born in Massachusettes about 1869.

28 iii. Rissa E. UMBERHAND was born in Cambridge, MA about 1873. She married Lewis H. PHILLIPS in Cambridge, MA., September 24, 1894. Lewis was the son of George S. PHILLIPS and Elizabeth CLARK.

29 iv. Florence UMBERHAND was born in Massachusettes May 1879.

9. John² UMBERHAND (Johann (John)¹) was born in New York about 1845. John died February 12, 1919 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., at 73 years of age. His body was interred February 15, 1919 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA, Cambridge Cemetery.

He married Mary in Massachusetts, about 1866.

John was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Boston, Suffolk County, MA. John is listed in the Cambridge City Directory for the years 1869 and 1870 as a cigar maker.

21. William Philip³ UMBERHAND (Philip W.², Johann (John)¹) was born in West Roxbury, Suffolk Co., MA August 7, 1867. William died July 16, 1898 Boston, Suffolk Co., MA, at 30 years of age. His body was interred July 18, 1898 in Roxbury, MA., St. Joseph's Cemetery.

He married Katherine Frances DAVERON in Newton, Middlesex Co., MA, June 25, 1891.  Katherine was born in County Galway, Ireland about 1870. Katherine was the daughter of Michael DAVERON and Mary Frances WATERS.  After William died  Katherine married William Small. 

William Philip UMBERHAND and Katherine Frances DAVERON had the following children:

32 i. Philip Eugene⁴ UMBERHAND was born in Newton, MA March 24, 1892.

33 ii. Harold Joseph UMBERHAND was born in Newton, MA March 24, 1892.

34 iii. Ruth Abigail UMBERHAND was born in Brookline, MA. March 3, 1893. She married Frank Bertram CHAPLIN in Cambridge, MA., December 14, 1917.  See Chaplin Family for further information.

35 iv. William D. UMBERHAND was born in Newton, MA March 2, 1894. William died April 8, 1894 in Newton, MA, at less than one year of age.

36 v. Walter UMBERHAND was born in Boston, MA April 1895. Walter died September 1895 in Boston, MA, at less than one year of age.

37 vi. Howard R. UMBERHAND was born in Boston, MA January 1898. Howard died August 12, 1898 in Boston, MA, at less than one year of age. His body was interred August 13, 1898 in Roxbury, MA, St. Joseph Cemetery.

38 vii. Frances UMBERHAND was born 1898.
