First Generation1. Johann (John)1 UMBERHAND was born in Bavaria (Germany) June 9, 1814. Johann died July 29, 1870 in Boston, Suffolk County, MA, at 56 years of age. His body was interred in Jamaica Plains, MA., Forrest Hills Cemetery. On his death certificate his cause of death is listed as fracture of skull from accident. No obit has been found for John. Johann (John) arrived in New York on October 16, 1833 on the ship Albany. On the passenger list the spelling of his name is Umbehend. Eight of his 14 children were born in New York state. He is listed in the New York City Directory for the years 1844, 1845, 1846, and 1847. His occupation is listed as a tailor. By 1849 he and his family relocated to Roxbury, MA. and is shown in the 1850 Roxbury, MA. census and his trade again is listed as tailor. In the 1860 census his trade is listed at Lager Beer Laborer, but in 1870 his trade again is listed as tailor. By the 1870 census the family has moved to Cambridge, MA. After John's death his wife is found living with their son Amos in the 1880 Cambridge, MA. census. He married Maria Katherina BITNER about 1836, possibly in New York. Maria was born in Baden, Germany February 20, 1819. Maria was the daughter of Adam BITNER and Catherine. Maria died August 23, 1894 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., at 75 years of age. Her body was interred August 26, 1894 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co. MA, Cambridge Cemetery. Johann (John) UMBERHAND and Maria Katherina BITNER had the following children:

4. William M.2 UMBERHAND (Johann (John)1) was born in New York about 1839. William died June 17, 1871 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., at 31 years of age. His body was interred in Roxbury, Norfolk Co., MA.. He married Bertha BEST Boston, Suffolk Co., MA., October 22, 1868. Bertha was born about 1850. Bertha was the daughter of Andrew BEST. He was listed in the Cambridge City Directory for the years 1868 and 1869 as a cigar maker. His cause of death is listed as typhoid fever. William M. 5. Philip W.2 UMBERHAND (Johann (John)1) was born in New York September 1840. Philip died July 27, 1918 in Newton, Middlesex Co., MA., at 77 years of age. His body was interred July 30, 1918 in Newton, Middlesex Co., MA., Newton Cemetery. He married Abigail O'BRIEN Boston, Suffolk Co., MA., June 5, 1864 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Their witnesses were William Campbell and Margaret Bready. They were married by Rev. Guiseppe Nicola Baratta. Abigail was born Boston, Suffolk Co., MA March 1848. Abigail was the daughter of William O'BRIEN and Ellen. Abigail died January 14, 1903 in Newton, Middlesex County, MA, at 54 years of age. Her body was interred in West Roxbury, Suffolk County, MA. Abby died of tuberculosis. Philip was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Newton, Middlesex Co., MA. Philip was listed as the head of a family on the 1910 Census in Newton, Middlesex Co., MA. His occupation was listed as plumber. From the Newton Circuit, 2, August 1918: Phillip W. Umberhand, the veteran
journeyman plumber, passed away on Saturday of last week after an illness
lasting several years in the 80th year of his age. Mr. Umberhand was born
in the city of New York of German parentage. He came to this village as a
young man and went to work for A. W. Snow, being his boss plumber for 15
years. When G. Wilbur Thompson succeeded Mr. Snow he remained with Mr.
Thompson, and was retained in various capacities by Mr. Thompson until his
failing health caused him to relinquish active duties, but he was still
retained on the payroll at a nominal salary. Philip W. UMBERHAND and Abigail O'BRIEN had the following children:
7. Frederick2 UMBERHAND (Johann (John)1) was born in New York about 1843. Frederick died August 8, 1884 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., at 41 years of age. His body was interred in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA.. He married Margaret LYONS in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA, July 10, 1870. Margaret is the daughter of Dennis LYONS. Frederick vouched for Arnold Verkampen, a cooper smith and Holy Trinity parishioner, when the latter was naturalized on 23, October 1876. Frederick is listed in the Cambridge Cities Directories for the years 1865 through 1870 and the again in the 1872 through 1878 as a brush maker. In the 1879 city directory for Cambridge he is listed as an upholsterer and in the 1880 directory as a brush maker again. Frederick UMBERHAND and Margaret LYONS had the following children:
8. Jacob2 UMBERHAND (Johann (John)1) was born in New York June 1845. Jacob died January 10, 1919 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., at 73 years of age. His body was interred January 14, 1919 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA., Cambridge Cemetery. He married Mary FRITCHER Boston, Suffolk Co., MA., December 31, 1868. Mary was born in Baden, Germany April 1847. Mary died January 12, 1916 at 68 years of age. Her body was interred January 15, 1916 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA., Cambridge Cemetery. Jacob was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA. Jacob was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA. Jacob is listed in the Cambridge City Directory for the years 1871 through 1875 as a machinist. Jacob UMBERHAND and Mary FRITCHER had the following children:

William died July 16, 1898 Boston, Suffolk Co., MA, at 30 years of age. His body was interred July 18, 1898 in Roxbury, MA., St. Joseph's Cemetery. He married Katherine Frances DAVERON in Newton, Middlesex Co., MA, June 25, 1891. Katherine was born in County Galway, Ireland about 1870. Katherine was the daughter of Michael DAVERON and Mary Frances WATERS. After William died Katherine married William Small. William Philip UMBERHAND and Katherine Frances DAVERON had the following children:
